One of world debuts that I’ve been waiting for at 2016 LA Auto Show is 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The first ever SUV from Italian company has become the most-talked-about at the annual event. And also Stelvio is one of six cars that will be introduced until 2018 from Alfa Romeo.
The ‘Stelvio’ name is taken from Stelvio Pass in Italian Alps which is named one of greatest driving roads in the world. The compact luxury SUV is built on the same platform as latest Alfa Romeo Giulia. No wonder it has exactly the same face. Up front, you will notice that Stelvio wears Giulia design from the LED headlights, front bumper, and diamond-shaped air dam. The triangle grille is still there as an Alfa Romeo’s identity.
From side, the design reminds me of the more luxury SUV Maserati Levante. And at the rear, you will see the LED taillights with a good design. For Quadrifoglio version, buyer will get rooftop spoiler, black rear diffuser, and quad-exhaust to add sporty look.
Just like its front exterior design, the interior design of Stelvio also reminds me of Giulia. Moreover, there are red-stitching on the dashboard, center console, and door trim. In the center cockpit there’s a 6.5-inch touchscreen as a standard (Alfa Romeo also offers an 8.8-inch as an optional), and 14-speaker audio system form Harman Kardon.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio is equipped with Full-speed Forward Collision Warning-Plus which can bring the car to a full stop when a potential frontal collision is detected, Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus with Full Stop which can also stop the car completely under certain traffic conditions and Lane Departure Warning, and adaptive cruise control.
The Italian carmaker puts Chassis Domain Controller and DNA (DNA Pro for Quadrifoglio model) drive mode for all variants. The system allowing the car to adjust how much power each wheel receives. Moreover, Alfa Romeo provides three driving mode for all models: Natural, Dynamic, and Advanced Efficiency. And if you bought Quadrifoglio type, you will get an additional driving mode named Race.
Under the hood, buyer can choose 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged for Stelvio and Stelvio Ti. The engine can produce 280 hp and 231 km/h in top speed. Its performance can reach 100 km/h from zero in 5.4 seconds. For speed enthusiast, Alfa Romeo offers Stelvio Quadrifoglio which brings the same engine as Giulia Quadrifoglio. It means buyer can find 2.9 liter V6 turbocharged producing 505 hp. Its maximum speed is 284 km/h and can reach 0 km/h to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. All variants is mated to 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive Q4 system.
According to Reid Bigland, Alfa Romeo’s boss the Quadrifoglio version beating Porsche Cayenne S which is bigger and more powerful in a lap time in Nurburgring. The data simulation showed 7 minutes and 59 seconds.
2018 Alfa Romeo is ready to beat its rivals, Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, and Porsche Macan in the middle of 2017.
