USA is a heaven for big cars such as, SUVs and trucks. And that’s why Volkswagen (VW) is interested to join the SUV segment that is made and sold in USA exclusively. After a long wait, finally the German carmaker introduced Atlas to the American this week in California.
VW Atlas is built on Modular Transverde Matrix (MQB) platform. Moreover, Atlas is the largest VW in the United States with 5,073 mm length, 1,979 mm width, and 1,767 mm height. The company also said that the SUV came up with 7-seater layout.
In terms of exterior design, Atlas is based-on CrossBlue Concept that made its world debut at 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Up front, VW’s designers prefer to keep the most part of concept car and bring to production version. You can see from its dual-headlights that features W-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights. Below the headlights, there are turn signal lights with LED technology. Furthermore, VW redesigned the grille which now comes up with a new motive. And also there’s a redesigned front bumper which features trapezoidal fog lights.
From side, the 7-seater SUV still have bulky wheel arches just like its concept version. But the German automaker added a horizontal line that flows from front wheel arches to taillights. And at the rear, VW’s designers prefer did some major changes. The taillights now looks like other VW cars with trapezoidal form and LED stuff. To add luxury look, there are two chrome accents which are placed below the taillights flowing from left to right with ‘ATLAS’ lettering in the middle and on the redesigned rear bumper. Meanwhile to add sporty value, VW put rear spoiler and dual-exhaust.
VW announced that Atlas can accommodate seven adults even if three people sit in the third row. Overall, the interior is roomy. And for gadget freaks, VW provides Car-Net infotainment system which enables you to connect your device using Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or MirrorLink. If you were an audiophile, the company is ready to attract your ears with Fender premium audio system featuring 12 speakers and 480-watt amplifier.
For safety system, the Wolfsburg-based company offers a long list such as, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Departure Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking, and more.
The big SUV is powered by a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged producing 238 hp. Another choice is 3.6 liter V6 delivers 280 hp. All the engines are mated to 8-speed automatic transmission. The 4-cylinder SUV is only offered with FWD configuration. Meanwhile the V6 is offered with both FWD or 4Motion All Wheel Drive.
Built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 2017 Volkswagen Atlas will be released in Spring 2017 and will make its world debut at 2016 LA Auto Show next November.
