BMW Heats Up Executive Segment with Latest 2017 5-Series

Finally BMW pulled the wrap off from the all-new 5-Series that we’ve been waiting for. So what do people expect from the latest executive sedan? More luxury, sportier characteristic, faster, more efficient, and of course more sophisticated than its predecessor and its rival.

Speaking of exterior design, the Bavaria carmaker seems like follow Mercedes’ formula when developed the latest E-Class. Yeah, the 2017 5-Series adopts the latest 7-Series design. So it looks like a mini 7-Series. And I don’t know why it looks perfectly match with the dimension. Meanwhile at the rear, BMW’s designers prefer to make a brand new design to take from the latest 7-Series. The result is good. The German automaker is inspired by the LED taillights from the previous generation but now it has smaller dimension, more circular design, and more elegant look.

The new 5-Series grows up in dimension. According to BMW, the 4-door sedan is 36 mm longer, 6 mm wider, 2 mm taller, and 7 mm longer wheelbase. It means that now it has 4,935 mm length, 1,866 mm width, 1,464 mm height, and 2,975 mm wheelbase. For those who wants to know about its luggage capacity, the company said that it is 10 liter bigger than the previous generation which means 530 liter.

BMW’s engineers put double wishbone suspension in front and multi-link at the rear. But they have changed geometry and made extensive use of aluminum to further improve handling and comfort. And there are four different versions such as, standard, sport, electronically controlled dampers, and active roll bars.

Unfortunately, there’s no new thing inside the car. BMW’s designers seem to take the 7-Series’ interior design to the seventh-generation of 5-Series. All the things are same such as, 3-spoke steering wheel with buttons, 10.25-inch touchscreen in the center cockpit, dashboard, and more. And I hope buyer will get the same high-quality material as 7-Series.

The latest BMW 5-Series will be offered with four turbocharged engines (two petrols and two diesels) at launch for the first time. For petrol engines, buyer can choose 530i with a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder producing 248 hp, and 540i with a 3.0 liter 6-cylinder inline producing 335 hp. And for diesels, buyer will be offered 530d with two engine choices, 2.0 liter and 3.0 liter. All the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, but 530d with 2.0 liter engine will get a 6-speed manual transmission.

The German carmaker also will offer new powertrains later on. The first 530e plug-in hybrid which has an electric motor combined with a 2.0 liter petrol engine 4-cylinder turbocharged. Total output is 249 hp and 420 Nm of torque with fuel average consumption is 50 km/liter. The second is M550i xDrive which comes up with a V8 4.4 liter producing 455 hp and mated with AWD system. BMW said that the xDrive can do 0 km/h to 100 km/h in 4 seconds which means faster than current M5. And the last is the car that speed enthusiasts have been waiting for, M5. The sport sedan is said to get all-wheel drive system and a 600 hp engine.

Just like its rival, BMW equipped the 2017 5-Series with an autonomous driving tech feature. The system enables the car to follow other cars, overtake other cars, and communicate with other BMWs on the road. Furthermore, there is ParkNow feature that will help you to find a parking space.
