Mercedes-Maybach 6 Concept Brings Us Back to Gatsby Era

After teasing us couple of pictures, Mercedes-Maybach finally unveiled its latest concept car, 6 Concept to the world at 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Just like other people have said before its official introduction, it’s a behemoth-luxury coupe. Interestingly, 6 comes up with gullwing-door that reminds us of 1954 Mercedes 300SL.

So, ‘6’ name is taken from the length of the coupe that reach almost 6 meters (5.7 meters in actual). Mercedes’ designers presented a dramatic exterior design. For me, overall the coupe looks good, elegant, luxurious, but too big in dimension (but it’s okay it’s just a concept car). The German carmakers wants to bring us back to Gatsby era when the cars had long engine hood (now it’s a luggage!), muscular, and had sleek exterior design. Take it easy, the giant car doesn’t have boxy form just like its predecessor in 1920s to 1930s.

Up front, we can see thin LED headlights and a giant-chromed grille which unfortunately reminds me of Buick’s waterfall grille. On the trunk hood, there’s a line in the center that enables owner to open it in just left side or right side. From the side, you will realize how long the coupe is. Moreover, you will notice that Mercedes has made the big coupe is so aerodynamic. It’s seen from the sloping line in A- and B-pillar.

The red 24-inch wheels are inspired by Mercedes IAA Concept that made its world debut at 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. At the rear, there’s a simple design featuring horizontal and slim LED taillights. Uniquely, Mercedes’ designers placed drink holder at the back. The rear windows are split by a third LED taillights that flows from roof to rear-end. It reminds me of 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

Inside, Mercedes calls it ‘360° lounge’. Its name reflects the interior design that flows connecting the dashboard, door trim, and seats. To add luxury look, the 2+2 coupe is given wooden accents and elm for the floor area. Behind the 2-spoke steering wheel, there are dual-circular instrument panel which looks so classic. But Mercedes doesn’t forget about future stuff. So, the German carmaker introduced the active windscreen that will show the driver some important information, such as GPS, speed, and more.

Maybach 6 Concept is powered by four permanent magnet synchronous electric motors each driving a single wheel. Total output is around 750 hp and it can reach 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds. Moreover, its top speed is 250 km/h and its driving range over 500 km with full battery.

So, will Mercedes-Maybach 6 Concept be produced in the near future? There’s no information about it. Probably it’s just a concept car. But probably it previews an ultra-luxury coupe from Maybach that will compete with Rolls-Royce Wraith.
