After the official photos has leaked a couple months ago, finally Mazda Japan released the official pictures of 2017 3 to the world. Named Axela in China and Japan, the compact car gets facelift considering that its age is 2-year old now. The changes are not much, you have to see it carefully to spot the changes in the exterior and Mazda also added the engine line-up and features.
The 2017 Axela/3 has a similar exterior design to its predecessor. Mazda’s designers have done minimum changes. Up front, there’s a new fascia, redesigned headlights (for higher variant buyer will get adaptive LED headlights with glare-free high beams and wide-range low beams that can be operated at 40 km/h or higher and 40 km/h or lower). Furthermore, now the fog lights is smaller than its predecessor. And at the rear, the changes are only bigger reflector lights, and new sculpted lines around the reflector lights.
For the interior, buyer will get a new steering wheel and upgraded metal trim on the doors and dashboard. Now, the compact model features electronic parking brake, updated head-up display, driver seat that can save the position and angle of head-up display, and Highway Mode that enables driver to see further distance at 95 km/h or more.
Mazda doesn’t forget about safety system. The updated Axela/3 gets upgraded Advanced Smart City Brake system which can detects pedestrians and vehicles around the car. It uses forward-sensing camera and operates between 4 km/h to 80 km/h. A new technology that buyer can get is G-Vectoring Control (GVC) system. It is a system that varies engine torque in response to steering inputs in order to provide integrated control of lateral and longitudinal acceleration forces. Moreover, the technology provides more effective control in every situation from everyday driving to avoid collision. Latest Mazda Axela/3 is the first model that implemented the system.
Under the hood, for Japan market there is a petrol engine SkyActiv-G 1.5 liter. And diesels are SkyActiv-D 2.2 liter and the newest for JDM SkyActiv-D 1.5 liter turbo. All the engines are mated to 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
2017 Mazda Axela/3 is available in hatchback and sedan body-type. It’s already sold in Japan. And I expect it will make its debut at 2016 Paris Motor Show this September.
