2016 NY Show Highlights: Sport Cars Storm City Never Sleep


Almost in every single A-list international auto show, we can see the automaker unveil its latest sport car, including at 2016 New York Auto Show that’s just open. In the annual auto show, Chevrolet introduced ‘the hottest’ version of Camaro, ZL1, and Japannese giants (Nissan and Toyota) revealed the refreshment of ‘Godzilla’ GT-R and 86 which replaces Scion FR-S.

Chevrolet brings its pony car to the higher step. Basically, Camaro is a pony car, Camaro SS brings the coupe to muscle car segment, and at 2016 New York Auto Show the carmaker revealed 2017 Camaro ZL1 which is ready take the sport car to supercar segment. So, what’s so special?

Under the hood, Chevy’s engineers put Corvette Z06 engine. It means that latest Camaro ZL1 has a LT4 V8 powertrain 6.4 liter supercharged producing 640 hp and 868 Nm of torque. Yeah, it’s 10 hp and 10 Nm slower than the Z06. But if you compared to the previous generation, it’s 60 hp and 84 Nm faster. The engine is mated to 6-speed manual transmission with active rev-matching capability is standard for ZL1. But Chevrolet offers another transmission option that will make you shock, the 10-speed automatic gearbox! Yes, 10-speed and Camaro ZL1 becomes the first car use it.

Unfortunately, there’s no official performance figure yet. But the new one should be faster than its predecessor. For your information, the previous ZL1 can reach 100 km/h from 0 km/h in 4 seconds for manual, and 3.9 seconds for automatic. Meanwhile, for the top speed, the old one can reach 290 km/h for manual, and 296 km/h for automatic.

Let’s move to see the Camaro ZL1 from the outside. Up front, you can see the redesigned grille with a new motive, a larger air dam, wider front fenders, and now the engine hood gets carbon fiber inserts and heat extractor. At the rear, Chevy added rear rear spoiler, and quad-exhaust. Overall, 2017 Camaro ZL1 looks more aggressive.

Inside, there are standard Recaro front seats, a sueded flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob, while Chevrolet’s Performance Data Recorder will be available too. 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will go on sale at the end of the year.


2017 Nissan GT-R is one of cars that I’ve waited for at this year’s New York Auto Show. Yeah, it’s just another facelift from Japanese automaker. But it’s always interesting to see what’s new inside the Godzilla. According to Nissan, the enhancement can be split to 5 areas: driving performance, exterior design, interior refinement, ride comfort and advanced technology.

The fast coupe is still bring V6 engine 3.8 liter twin-turbo. But Nissan’s engineers re-tuned the powertrain, so that now it produces 565 hp. It means that 20 hp faster than previous model. The torque curve is now flatter for enhanced on-demand acceleration, while the new Titanium exhaust system comes with Active Noise Cancellation and Active Sound Enhancement technologies. Acoustic glass and targeted sound dampening should also help reduce wind and road noise inside the cabin.

For the exterior business, Nissan has done some changes. Up front, there is a new grille with matte chrome finish V-shaped style that has become latest design language for the company. Moreover, you can see smaller LED Daytime Running Lights in front bumper. There’s no change for the headlights, but the automaker adds LED Daytime Running Lights. The engine hood now features sculpted lines that forms V-shaped. Overall, the latest GT-R looks more elegant.


Now let’s move in to the cabin. Nissan replaces the old steering wheel with the new one which looks more elegant. But the company keeps the instrument panel. In addition, there’s a Nappa leather-wrapped instrument panel and revised front seat designs for enhanced comfort. For those who hates so many buttons (actually, there are 27 buttons in previous model), Nissan dialed down it to just 11 buttons. And the 7-inch LCD touchscreen is replaced with 8-inch LCD touchscreen.

2017 Nissan GT-R will go on sale this summer.


Scion is dead. So, how about Scion FR-S which has become the coolest car from the youth brand (that’s my opinion)? Take it easy. Because Toyota is still selling it in US market as Toyota 86 just like other countries, except European market which using GT86. And at 2016 New York Auto Show, the Japanese giant unveiled the facelift of 86.

2017 Toyota 86 now features wider grille, redesigned headlights that features new LED Daytime Running Lights, and a new front bumper. And at the rear, Toyota redesigned the LED taillights. Inside, Toyota says it added a new Grandlux soft-touch material on the instrument panel surround and the door trims, together with different upholstery for the seats with silver stitching and a new sports steering wheel with integrated audio controls, and in the automatic models, bigger paddle shifters.

For the engine, 2017 Toyota 86 is still bring the same powertrain, 2.0 liter 4-cylinder now producing 205 hp (just 5 hp faster than the previous model) for manual, and 200 hp for automatic. 2017 Toyota 86 will go on sale this fall.
