Mini has released the third generation of Cooper Hatch last year and this year, the British company is ready to introduce the convertible version to the world. And yesterday, the automaker has released the official photos of 2016 Cooper Convertible which will make its debut at 2015 Tokyo Motor Show next November.
For the exterior design, don’t expect (or should I say never?) anything new. Because since Mini has been under BMW, the design never gets major change. The convertible comes with the same design with the hatchback. At the front, there’s still round headlights that features LED Daytime Running Lights, and honeycomb grille with chrome accent. And at the rear, we can see the same taillights like the Hatch. But its dimension is different. The open top car is 3,821 mm length, 1,727 mm width, and 1,415 mm height.

The soft top comes up with a new open/close roof mechanism and a new structure so its cabin is quieter than its predecessor. Moreover, you can open or close the roof while driving at speed up to 30 km/h in 18 seconds. Interestingly, Mini offers a new customization option for the top is a Union Jack pattern woven into the fabric of the roof. The carmaker claims that luggage space is 25% bigger. Mini said that it was 250 liter when the roof is closed and 160 liter when the roof is opened.
At launch, Mini offers two petrol engines, 1.5 liter 3-cylinder producing 134 hp for Cooper, and 2.0 liter 4-cylinder produces 189 hp for Cooper S. Meanwhile, for European consumer Mini will offer Cooper D which has a diesel engine 3-cylinder 1.5 liter with 114 hp. Furthermore, Mini plans to release a stronger diesel engine that has 168 hp and John Cooper Works edition with a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo producing 228 hp in the near future. All those engines are mated to 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed automatic transmission as an optional.
2016 Mini Cooper Convertible will go on sale in March 2016.
