Do you own a Mercedes S-Class? Do you feel bore with the 4-door sedan or coupe form? Or have you dreamed to own an S-Class Cabriolet? If so, your dream comes true. Mercedes just pulled the wrap off on 2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet. Yes, you read correctly. The German automaker just revealed the luxury cabriolet after 44 years hiatus (the last one was made in 1971).
The new S-Class Cabrio is based-on S-Class Coupe. So, it is almost the same in every single aspect from exterior design, interior, and engine. The difference is the cabriolet car now using soft-top roof. For the dimension, between Coupe and Cabriolet is like a twin girl. Both of the car have 5,027 mm length, 1,899 width, and for the height the Cabriolet is 4 mm taller becoming 1,413 mm due to the using of the folding roof.
Mercedes said that the roof could be opened or closed in 20 seconds. And you can do that while driving up to 60 km/h. The company claims that the soft-top roof has 3 layers. The first layer or outer layer is fabric cover features butyl layer as a water barrier on the inside. The second layer is neoprene layer that be able to reduce noise level during the trip. And the third layer is insulating layer prevents the bows that, in other convertibles, are visible from the outside.
Just like other convertibles from three-pointed-star, S-Class Cabriolet features AIRSCARF and AIRCAP. Those systems heat the neck and minimize air buffeting for driver and passenger when the roof is down. Moreover, Mercedes introduces new THERMOTRONIC system for the first time. The climate control system now controlled fully-automatic and providing the best climate in all conditions. It means that you don’t have to choose open or close mode anymore.
Just like what I’ve said on the top for the powertrain, Mercedes’ engineers put the same engine options for S-Class Cabriolet. The S500 Cabriolet is powered by V8 4.7 liter turbocharged producing 455 hp and 700 Nm of torque and mated to 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. Another choice is Mercedes-AMG S63 Cabriolet. It has V8 5.5 liter biturbo produces 577 hp and 900 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed.
2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet will make its world debut at 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show this September. If you were interested, you can order the car from next December and the delivery will start spring 2016.
