In Indonesia, MPV is the most popular segment because it can accommodate five to seven people. Meanwhile, American prefer to buy big cars such as, SUVs, trucks, and now crossovers even though sometimes the gas price gets high and higher. That’s why in 2015 Detroit Auto Show some automakers introduced new SUVs and crossovers.
Audi officially revealed the new 2016 Q7 at 2015 NAIAS. The second generation gets big changes. The big news is now Q7 is lighter about 325 kg than its predecessor, thanks to aluminum that’s used some parts of its body structure. Audi said that now doors, front fenders, hood, and tailgate were made from aluminum. Its new dimension is slightly shorter and narrower than the old Q7. But the company claims that the cabin is longer and offers more headroom. Moreover, the interior design is nice and looked modern with high-quality material.
Unfortunately, the exterior design is not like what I expected before that will have a spectacular design. It’s a plain design even though it comes with latest Audi design language. The new Q7 is more like bigger Q3. For the engines choice, Audi offers 3.0 liter V6 petrol engine with supercharged produces 328 hp and 440 Nm of torque. For diesel lover, there’s a V6 3.0 liter powertrain which produces 268 hp and 600 Nm of torque. Both of those engines are mated to 8-speed automatic transmission. For Asian market, Audi will offer 4-cylinder engine 2.0 liter TFSI produces 248 hp and 370 Nm of torque.
2016 Mercede GLE comes up at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. Like what I’ve said in previous post, for me it’s still an awkward car. It’s like Mercedes stole the BMW X6’s styling. You can see it from the its body line. Up front, Mercedes designer puts sporty design with headlights which reminds me to other latest Mercedes models. From side, it looks too high for GLE and make it even more awkward. At the back side, we can see a la S-Class Coupe tailights which doesn’t seem suitable.
Inside, Mercedes presents luxury design with high quality material. Sporty look is seen from 3-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel, and using carbon fiber in some areas. Under the hood, there’s a V6 3.0 liter engine produces 362 hp and mated with 9-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes’ all-wheel-drive system, 4Matic.
Once again, Volkswagen (VW) previews its mid-size crossover for US market at 2015 NAIAS. This time, the German automaker unveiled Cross Coupe GTE Concept. The concept car that’s built on MQB platform has 4,846 mm long, 2,029 mm wide, and 1,735 mm tall. It has an exterior design which is almost the same with two previous VW’s concept cars, CrossBlue and CrossBlue Coupe. But it only can take 5 passengers.
The four-door SUV concept comes with hybrid powertrain. Its conventional engine is VR6 petrol 3.6 liter produces 276 hp and accompanied by 54-hp electric motor in front and 114 hp electric motor in rear. Total horsepower that it can produce is about 355 hp and the top speed is 209 km/h. Driver can activate ‘E-Mode’ that enables shutting down the VR6 engine and let the 114-hp electric motor moves the car up to 32 km.
From Sweden, Volvo revealed its latest experiment in car (sorry, this time isn’t a new safety tech). Its new car named, S60 Cross Country. S60? No, you don’t read a wrong name and I didn’t type a wrong name. Yeah, seems like Volvo is trying to explore further with its Cross Country after V70 Cross Country made success and has created a new segment. The carmaker said that it was the first premium sedan which had the same level of capability and rugged design cues of its Cross Country wagons.
The engineer increase its height of 65 mm and featured All-Wheel Drive system. But in Europe and selected countries, the S60 Cross Country will also be available in front wheel drive. The mid-size sedan is offered with 18-inch and 19-inch wheels with high profile tyres. Volvo claims that the tyre improves comfort and all-road capabilities and also reducing road noise. For the powertrain, Volvo offers 2.0 liter 5-cylinder petrol engine with turbo and produces 250 hp. There’s a diesel engine choice 4-cylinder D4 produces 187 hp. Later, Volvo is going to add another engine choice, D4 diesel 5-cylinder 2.4 liter.
